7月時開始撰寫關於攝影「返回原點」的討論,首篇就對長久以來人都希望將眼前所見的景象永久保留的說法提出質疑。這一點上《Photography: A Cultural History》的作者Mary Warner Merien寫來比我更加斬釘截鐵。引用19世紀業餘攝影家Oliver Wendel Holmes(1809-1894)在1859年發表文章中一句「We do not remember any prediction of such an inconceivable wonder」,Warner Merien的結論是「在攝影術發明前的幾個世紀裡,無人預見到它會出現。」
這樣的立場,雖或未至於完全推翻紐約現代博物館從Beaumont Newhall到Peter Galassi的攝影歷史觀 ─ 攝影是從西方藝術發展延伸而成的圖像系統,但起碼也是個重要的修訂,顯示了在1800年前後西方社會與文化發生了的範式轉移。
